Sean McCormack suffered his first mental health crisis six years after he had qualified as a vet – a career that was all he had ever wanted and worked for. “I felt like I would be letting people down if I gave up, so it took me a long time to admit to myself that I wasn’t happy and it was affecting my health,” he says. The rates of depression, anxiety and even suicide in vets are very high, and it was though the help of the organisation Vetlife that Sean was able to gain some clarity and refocus his career. “We base our whole identity on our job. And it is just a job. It’s an important job, but it is just a job.”
