Mental wellbeing for children and teenagers
Jo Morton-Brown
Emotional health practitioner Jo Morton-Brown works as a school counsellor, for kids aged 4 to 18. In our exclusive free masterclass, Jo has recorded a chapter for each age group, to help children and young people understand how they are feeling so they can better help themselves.
What you’ll learn
This masterclass is split into three chapters, depending on the age of the child or teenager. It covers a range of topics including positive mindset, friendships, and stress and motivation. Each chapter includes practical exercises for the child.
Chapters:
1. Little ones and tweens
This chapter covers positive mindset, affirmations, and trying your best, as well as an early understanding of how worries can weigh us down.
2. Teenagers
Aimed at 11-16 year olds, this chapter covers our in-built threat detector (the amygdala) and what might trigger it, as well as friendships, comfort zone, resilience and social media.
3. Young adults
Aimed at the over-16s, this chapter explains the emotional and physical signs of stress, and how to pinpoint what we think might be causing us worry. Jo explains how pressure about the future, including having a job, friends, social media, and not feeling good enough, can weigh us down. She demonstrates how to do a full body scan to identify where we are holding tension.

Building Resilience To Deal With Hard Times
A toolkit for accessing our natural resources
The Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl said:
Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
When times are hard it doesn’t always feel as if there is any space. Furthermore, we can’t always see our choices and tend to fall back on old habits, which don’t always work. Resilience is the ability to recover from, or adjust to the challenges and difficulties that we face in life. Learning to look at our habits freshly, to trust our own inner strengths and resources and to reach for new solutions will give us the courage to make more informed choices.
This toolkit is for anyone interested in uncovering their natural strengths to find their own growth and freedom.
Participants will learn:
- how habits work and how we can change them;
- some simple strategies to use when facing difficulties;
- how stress works and how to cope with it;
- some techniques of self-compassion;
- some meditation exercises to practise any time;
- how engaging with kindness and compassion can help us to develop courage.
