When a friend died by suicide, barber Tom Chapman realised he had to do something to try to encourage colleagues and clients to open up. He founded The Lions Barber Collective to raise awareness for suicide prevention. But the combination of the privacy of the barber’s chair and the personal relationships has provided a salvation for many. “We see people regularly, it’s an intimate space, and we’re there for the biggest parts of their lives. It’s a great place for people to offload and release – there’s a huge level of trust.” Tom has also created BarberTalk, a course for other barbers and hairdressers to learn the skills to Recognise, Ask, Listen and Help.
